Preparing the top teams

Sándor Szabella has organised 15 international women’s tournaments in the past years. The last one in the series took place in December last year when three of the eight Champions League Main Round teams have taken part together with the EHF Cup team FTC.

The businissman living in Spain was motivated by a remarkable enthusiasm towards the game to start such an adventure.

Szabella invites CL teams for test tournamentsEurohandball.com: Which European top clubs have taken part at your tournaments so far?

Sándor Szabella: Not easy to list all of them. Apart from the Hungarian top clubs, such as Győri ETO, FTC, Dunaferr, we could host Hypo NÖ, the German HC Leipzig, the Danish Randers, the Croatian Podravka Koprovnica and Lokomotiva Zagreb, the Montenegrin Buducnost, the Russian Lada Togliatti and the Romanian Oltchim Valcea. Many of these top clubs return on a regular basis to our tournaments.

Eurohandball.com: How do you go about inviting the teams?

Sándor Szabella: I invite Champions League teams; the best 16 teams of this competition, first of all. I wish to continue this way and bring the top clubs to Hungary. Of course, when a team has a Hungarian coach, such as András Németh or Gyula Zsiga, it is just good becuase they always like to come. They know the circumstances well and they also know the strength of the local teams.

The most important is however, how strong the teams are. It is not enough to have only one top club, I have to provide other teams of similar quality. The foreign teams always ask first who the other teams will be.

I believe that today the best possible tournament to play would be with the following teams: Győr, Hypo, Valcea and Viborg. I hope that soon we can organise such a strong tournament. Anyway, only Viborg has not visited us out of these clubs so far.

Eurohandball.com: What can the fans expect from your tournaments in 2009?

Sándor Szabella: I’m planning at least three tournaments for the summer and one after Christmas. Details are not yet known, but I know that we will play over three weekends in August. Győri ETO, Debrecen and FTC have already confirmed that they will be coming. Buducnost and Zvezda have already agreed to com, while Hypo and Valcea will also visit.

I’m also proud of the last tournament we organised in December. Three of the current CL teams have taken part: Győri ETO, Podravka Koprivnica and Buducnost T-Mobile. Bízunk I hope that these clubs have benefitted from taking part.
