Since returning after two knee injuries, Itxako play maker Macarena Águilar has been playing on top level.
Macarena is back!
Macarena Águilar is the most creative playmaker in Spanish women’s handball. Unfortunately she suffered from two major injures during the end of the last season and in the beginning of the current one.
That was a difficult period for her, but these days are put behind now – Macarena is back on her best level again. After the 26-21 victory over Győrin the first leg of the semifinals, she is ready to reach out for the EHF Women Champions League final.
ehfCL.com: How does the team feel after the victory in Estella?
Macarena Águilar: We are very happy. That was the semifinal of the EHF Women’s Champions League, an extremely important game for us, and we made our fans really happy.
ehfCL.com: How do you look back on the game?
Macarena Águilar: We started not so well into the match but improved a lot in defence in the second half. We were able to give them a lot of problems to score.
ehfCL.com: Is Itxako Reyno De Navarra still a surprise for anybody?
Macarena Águilar: On the paper we might not be the strongest team that qualified from the Main Round. However, once again we performed very well, this time against Győr. We beat a great team in this round.
ehfCL.com: Did you enjoy the loud atmosphere in Estella last Saturday?
Macarena Águilar: Yes, of course I did! We are really thankful to our fans, it is an incredible feeling to play in this court. The fans supported us a lot in this game.
ehfCL.com: How happy were you with your personal performance?
Macarena Águilar: I am pretty satisfied with my performance. Against GyőrI played a good match and helped my team a lot in order to take the victory. That makes me really glad because I had to suffer a lot after two severe knee injuries. Being back on track now is like a jackpot for me.
ehfCL.com: You seem to have recovered and now return in your life’s best form to the crucial stage of the EHF Champions League...
Macarena Águilar: Isn’t it great? It felt quite normal, too. Overall I am very content for being able to help my team mates in such a special match in the exciting part of this important competition.
