AG Kbenhaven's star plazer is aiming for two victories in the VELUX EHF Champions League before the EURO break.
PRINT VERSION:

Aged just 24, Mikkel Hansen is already a world star.

He was voted part of the All Star Team and was top scorer at the World Championships 2011 in Sweden, where he took the Silver medal. But the left back shooter is not only successful with the Danish national team, but one of the leading players at AG Kobenhavn.

Mikkel Hansen, who played for two years at FC Barcelona before returning to Denmark, talks to ehfCL.com about the first VELUX EHF Champions League season with Kobenhavn and the ambitious targets of his club.

ehfCL.com: In Round 5 of the VELUX EHF Champions League, AG Kobenhavn suffered their first defeat in a month, losing to León. Was it a strange feeling?
Mikkel Hansen: We work hard to win every single game and we never feel good after a defeat. That was also the case in León, where we felt we could have won.

ehfCL.com: The re-match against the Spaniards in Round 6 was close, too. How did you manage to take those important points?
Mikkel Hansen: It was only hard work which made us win the match.

ehfCL.com: Next Sunday you play at Szeged. The Hungarians have beaten Montpellier on home ground this season. Is that a warning signal for Kobenhavn?
Mikkel Hansen: We have already played them at home and we are very aware of their skills.

ehfCL.com: Former World Handball player and four times EHF Champions League winner Olafur Stefansson has returned to your team after his injury. How is it to play next to this legend?
Mikkel Hansen: It's an honour to learn from the best.

ehfCL.com: Your club is playing in the VELUX EHF Champions League for the first time ever - are these matches special games for you, the club and the spectators?
Mikkel Hansen: We take each and every game seriously as players, but international games will always be special.

ehfCL.com: How did the popularity and media interest rise in and around Kobenhavn since you became Danish champions and qualified for the VELUX EHF Champions League?
Mikkel Hansen: Handball is already huge in Denmark. We played in front of a world record crowd of 36,000 spectators in May this year when we won the national title, so even though the VELUX EHF Champions League is big, we are used to enormous media interest.

ehfCL.com: What chance do AGK have to win your group?
Mikkel Hansen: We have a good chance, but so do Kiel, Montpellier and Ademar León.

ehfCL.com: One of the long-term goals at the club is to win the VELUX EHF Champions League - when will it happen?
Mikkel Hansen: I concentrate on winning each game and doing my best. AGK has the potential to win the VELUX EHF Champions League in the coming years, but it depends on many things.

ehfCL.com: You have two VELUX EHF Champions League matches remaining in 2011. What are your personal hopes before the break for the EHF EURO 2012?
Mikkel Hansen: We play every game to win it. We hope to win both in Hungary and in Kiel.

ehfCL.com: How does it feel to be the hero of your team?
Mikkel Hansen: We have many huge names and players, who are big in Denmark and internationally, but it's not about me or anyone else - it's about the team. No player can be great without a great team.
