2011/12 CL Draw Preview

The draw for the Qualification Tournaments of the VELUX EHF Champions League and the EHF Women’s Champions League and will take place at the EHF Office in Vienna on Monday 27 June 2011 at 16:00 hrs (local time).

Draw 1 – EHF Women’s Champions League Qualification Tournament Phase 1

Modus

In the first stage eight teams will meet in two tournaments named Group A and Group B with four teams each. Each team will face every other group opponent once, and after three matches per team the winners and the runners-up of the two groups go through to the next stage.

These four teams will be placed in Pot 4 of the Qualification Tournament 2 draw. The four losers of the tournaments go to Cup Winners’ Cup where they enter Round 2.

Qualification Tournaments 1 will be carried out on 02/03/04 September 2011.

Procedure

In step one a team from Pot 1 is drawn and then allocated to Group A or B. Consequently the other team of that pot goes into the other group. This procedure is then followed with Pots 2, 3 and 4.

The draw of the groups will be followed by a separate draw to determine the organisation rights in the two tournaments.

Draw 2 – EHF Women’s Champions League Qualification Tournament Phase 2

Modus

In the second stage 16 teams will meet in four tournaments named Group 1-4 with four teams each. These tournaments will be played in a final four format – with two semi-finals on the first day and the 3/4 placement match and the final on the second day. Only the four winners go through to the Group Matches stage of the EHF Women’s Champions League.

The semi-final fixtures at the four tournaments are compiled from the 2011/12 EHF Women’s Champions League Seeding List. Consequently the teams from Pot 1 will meet teams from Pot 4 and teams from Pot 2 will meet teams from Pot 3 on the first match day.

The four teams finishing fourth in Qualification Tournaments 2 continue in the Cup Winners’ Cup, where they enter in Round 2. The teams ranked second and third also go to the Cup Winners’ Cup, but enter Round 3.

Qualification Tournaments 2 will be carried out on 17/18 September 2011.

Procedure

According to the regulations, teams from the same country are protected from meeting each other in the Qualification Tournaments and the Group Matches of the EHF Women’s Champions League.

In step one of the draw a team from Pot 1 is drawn and then allocated to Group 1, 2, 3 or 4. This procedure is repeated for the other teams in Pot 1.

In step two one team after the other from Pot 2 is drawn and allocated to the possible Groups from 1-4, making sure that the two Norwegian teams Tertnes Bergen and Byasen do not meet in the same Group.

In step three one team after the other from Pot 3 is drawn and allocated to the possible Groups from 1-4, making sure that the two Danish teams Viborg HK and Randers HK do not meet in the same Group.

In step four one team after the other from Pot 4 is drawn and then allocated to Group 1, 2, 3 or 4.

The draw of the Groups 1-4 will be followed by a separate draw to determine the organisation rights in the four tournaments.

Draw 3 – VELUX EHF Champions League Qualification Tournaments

Modus

Besides the Wild Card Tournament – read about the modus here – twelve teams will meet in three Qualification Tournaments named Group 1, Group 2 and Group 3 with four teams each.

The matches of the Groups will be played in a final four format – with two semi-finals on the first day and the 3/4 placement match and the final on the second day. Only the three winners go through to the Group Phase stage of the VELUX EHF Champions League.

The semi-final fixtures at the three tournaments are compiled from the 2011/12 VELUX EHF Champions League Seeding List. Consequently the teams from Pot 1 will meet teams from Pot 4 and teams from Pot 2 will meet teams from Pot 3 on the first match day.

The teams finishing fourth in the Qualification Tournaments and the Wild Card Tournament continue in the EHF Cup, where they enter in Round 2. The teams ranked second and third in the four tournaments also go to the EHF Cup, but enter Round 3.

The three Qualification Tournaments will be carried out on 03/04 September 2011.
