Five VELUX EHF CL stars go for the title
Only players from current participants of the VELUX EHF Men’s Champions League are among the five nominees for the IHF World Handball Player of the Year 2010 voting.
An expert jury including famous and successful coaches like Lino Cervar, Heiner Brand, Ulrik Wilbek, Yevgeni Trefilov or Marit Breivik and IHF lecturers have made their proposals for this voting. Here are the nominees:
The French goalkeeper was awarded the World Handball Player title in the year 2008. This year he showed his outstanding class not only by winning the EHF EURO title in Austria with France, but especially by winning the EHF FINAL4 in Cologne with his club THW Kiel. For Omeyer it was the third CL title after winning 2007 with Kiel and 2003 with his former club Montpellier.
The Czech international has shown an outstanding performance and fantastic attacking skills this year. He was awarded Most Valuable Player at the EHF EURO 2010, became top scorer of the VELUX EHF Champions League season 2009/2010 – and raised the CL trophy with THW Kiel after the sensational final against FC Barcelona in Cologne.
The Serbian born goalkeeper, now naturalized in Spain, won the VELUX EHF Champions League title three times with his club Ciudad Real (2006, 2008, 2009). In 2010 he became Spanish Champion with Ciudad Real, five years after he was awarded World Handball Player of the Year 2005. He was also part of th eEHF FINAL4 in Cologne in May 2010.
The Frenchmen is aiming high with his club Montpellier this season after he became EHF EURO champion with France in January. In 2007 he became World Handball Player of the Year after winning the EHF Champions League with Kiel for the second time in his life, as he – like Omeyer – took the title 2003 with Montpellier.
The mighty Croatian pivot plays for HSV Hamburg in the VELUX EHF Champions League and won the Silver medal at the EURO in Austria. He is a weapon in both attack and defence.
For the first time ever journalists have the opportunity to give their votes. But also handball fans around the world can cast their vote for one of the five nominees in the newly installed media section of the IHF website.
The voting starts today and will end on 1 January 2011. The World Handball Player of the Year 2010 will be announced and awarded during the Men’s World Championship in Sweden 2011.
Tonight the World Handball player 2009, Slawomir Szmal, from the German CL club Rhein Neckar Löwen, will be awarded in Mannheim.
