EHF Marketing strengthens bond with Danmarks Radio further

Vienna, 09.11.2007 – The European Handball Federation (EHF) and Danish Radio (DR) have enjoyed a strong partnership tradition for some years. The EHF signed a 5 year contract with the Danish broadcasting company DR (Danmarks Radio) in 2006, guaranteeing optimised TV coverage in one of the leading European handball nations.

DR’s name has been attached to the professional broadcasting of the sport of handball throughout this period. These are just a few reasons why the European Handball Federation and in this case, the marketing arm of the European governing body, EHF Marketing GmbH, has reached the decision to approve the sublicensing of EHF Champions League handball between DR and DDtv.

Tor Lian, EHF President and Chairman of the EHF Marketing Advisory Board, reinforced the EHF-DR bond, “The EHF has a long and excellent history of working with DR and we are very proud to build on this even further. Denmark is a “handball nation” through and through, where handball is played at the highest of levels, which is why we want to work with such a highly-reputable partner to set a precedent for club handball, in particular the EHF Champions League. Our overall objective to promote and develop EHF Champions League Handball remains clearly in sight and we are ever nearing our target”

The EHF strives to guarantee high-quality coverage in all partner countries, which is why the EHF underlines that identical conditions and limitations will continue to apply for the sublicensing agreement with DDtv for the away matches.

Michael Wiederer, EHF Marketing Director; emphasises the importance the EHF sets ensuring the same conditions and limitations, “We have always had an excellent working foundation with DR, sharing similar visions and objectives for the development of top level club handball. This meant talks were openly and constructive form the outset. We stressed the results, which we wish to achieve and DR confirmed DDtv, as sub-licensee, can deliver the quality of product we are seeking”.

Lars Grarup, Director of Media DR underlines the close working relationship; “DR was in a very desperate economical situation that made it difficult to see a future for sports-transmissions on our channels. The emergence of a strong partner, DDtv, and the very good will from rights holders – not least the European Handball Federation – has made it possible to reach a solution that is very good for the Danish TV-viewers and for DR. Once again it has been proven that the ties between DR and the EHF are indeed close. We at DR look forward to working together with EHF and EHF Marketing in a strong partnership for many years to come”.

This move strengthens the excellent working relationship between the two organisations, which will be highlighted further as the EHF Marketing is about to enter into negotiations to extend the contract – EHF Champions League and European Cup Finals.
