Kiel win Champions Trophy
The playing hall, Dvorana Zlatorog, was filled with supporters for the Final of the Champions Trophy. The Slovenian fans were hoping to win against last year’s CL winner and these hopes remained alive only in the first 15 minutes of the game.
Kiel started somewhat better. This time it was Szilagyi and Anic to stay on the bench, Lundström played on the right wing. The emphasis was on a quick game full of improvisation.
As usual, Lövgren was in fantastic form. The home defence could hardly follow his passes with their eyes, in addition, he was also dangerous on goal. Ahlm and Kavticnik were difficult to keep under control for the Celje defence.
Reznar was the goalkeeper of the Slovenians and he saved in good form before the break. The arena almost exploded as Koksarov equalised in the 16th minute at 12-12, but this was the last time that the teams were equal. Kiel had a very good period before half time when it was 17-23 for the guests.
Kiel safeguard advantage
Despite the big difference, Celje tried once again to come closer and open the match again. Stojanovic and Kozlina were quite active, but the situation was difficult for them. They had to face a superb Omeyer in the goal who saved long shots, clear chances and 7-m shots as well.
On the other side, Kiel carried on with their superb play. Dominik Klein was also instrumental in the victory, as the left winger ran instead of three others and made a great job in defence. Lund was dangerous on goal and Lundström could also score from the right wing despite being a right-handed player.
There was no more chance for the hosts. Kiel already had a nine-goal lead just five minutes before the end, but Celje came back to four goals with a good finish. Kiel won the game and the Champions Trophy by 34-38. The home supporters applauded their players, but Kiel and especially former Celje star, Vid Kavticnik, were also given a standing applause for their great performance.
Top scorers:
Koksarov 10, Kozlina 5, Gajic 5; Kavticnik 10, Lövgren 9, Lund 8.
Comments from the coaches
Zvonimir Serdarusic:
I don't want to analyse the game as now we are simply happy to win the tournament. As it was exactly Celje to beat us in a previous edition of the Trophy in Spain, now I'm glad that we could win in Slovenia.
Kasim Kamenica:
Kiel were brilliant in the first half. We were hoping to level them, but it was not possible this time. Our defence was not the best and TWH played very well. Congratulations!
