Keep the Ball Rolling
The President of the European Handball Federation followed the Champions League from the beginning and has a unique insight into the development of the competition. On the occasion of the Champions League Gala, eurohandball.com talks to Tor Lian.
Eurohandball.com: You followed EHF Champions League from the very beginning. What do you think of the development it has gone through?
Tor Lian: The tournament has seen a tremendous development that is difficult to describe, but evident by just taking a look at the top matches from last season. Everything has evolved around the Champions League: the playing system has been adapted at certain points over the past 14 years to meet the needs of the market requirements; the clubs have become highly professional; the new blue/lagoon flooring and Champions League branding turned the playing halls into true handball arenas; the matches are broadcast all over Europe; and of course, the game has changed a lot. I believe it has become even more exciting for the supporters, which is demonstrated by a growing number of fans. Last year, we broke all spectator records and the TV audience figures also peaked.
Eurohandball.com: Would you have believed 15 years ago that Champions League would become so successful and popular?
Tor Lian: It did not come as a surprise to us. The game has always been very popular and we knew that by creating an exclusive competition and guaranteeing more top games to the fans, the success would come. We are also aware of the growing popularity of handball, which is due to the spectacular nature of the game. Handball has become very attractive for a wider public over the last 15 years.
Eurohandball.com: What are the objectives for the future development of the Champions League?
Tor Lian: We must carry on with the development and keep the ball rolling. The most important factor is to attract even more fans to the sports halls and even more viewers for the matches on TV and fulfil market demands.
Eurohandball.com: Which were the most unforgettable moments for you during these 15 years?
Tor Lian: I have seen many great athletes and unforgettable matches in the Champions League; it would be really difficult to pick one or two. It is always a great feeling to see sports halls filled with supporters, but luckily, EHF Handball CL could enjoy this feeling many times.
Eurohandball.com: What is this Gala event about?
Tor Lian: It is a good occasion to meet people who share the passion for handball and Champions League; hence the motto of the evening, “Celebrate the Passion”. Tonight is an evening of celebration, but we also think about the future of the game and will carry out the draw for the 2007/08 Champions League. If you just take a look at the names of the clubs and the strong competition in the early group stages, you can be sure that the 2007/08 season will be just as spectacular as the last one was.
